What is agentic AI?

The term 'agentic AI' is the 2024–2026 industry shorthand for AI systems that plan, call tools, and iterate — rather than producing a one-shot response. It's the architectural shift that turned LLMs from clever autocomplete into systems that can run a regulated workflow end-to-end. Here's what it actually means, where it works, and where it breaks.

Where the term came from

Through 2023, ‘LLM apps’ mostly meant chatbots — a model wrapped in a prompt with a UI. The shift through 2024–2025 was that products started running multi-step plans: read a request, retrieve grounding context, call a domain API, write back a structured decision, escalate the uncertain cases. Vendors started calling that pattern ‘agentic’. The substance is real even though the marketing isn’t always.

The agent reads the input and decides what tools to call, in what order. Some plans are fixed (workflow-style); some are model-decided.

Call a tool — search, database query, API request. The result feeds back into the agent's context.

What makes it safe for regulated work

Agentic AI is only as safe as the substrate around it. Three primitives matter: audit (every action is one immutable row), citation (the output points back to the source the agent grounded on), and escalation (uncertain cases route to humans, regardless of model verdict). Without these, agentic AI is a faster way to make worse decisions.

What is agentic AI in plain language?

Agentic AI is when an LLM is given a loop: read input → decide what to do → call a tool → read the result → decide next step → eventually return a final answer. The loop is what makes it 'agentic'. A chatbot just talks. An agent acts.

How is agentic AI different from a chatbot?

A chatbot returns text. An agent does things — calls APIs, queries databases, writes records, escalates to humans. The architectural shift is the addition of tools and a planning loop.

How is it different from RAG?

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is a technique inside agentic systems. The agent retrieves grounding context before reasoning. But RAG alone is one-shot; the agent loop allows the system to retrieve, reason, retrieve again, and act. Agentic AI uses RAG as a primitive, not the whole pattern.

What are the limits?

Foundation models still hallucinate. Agents that don't ground their output in retrieval and don't escalate on low confidence are dangerous in regulated workflows. The point of an audit-grade agentic platform is to make these failures legible (citations, escalation queue) rather than silent.

When should an enterprise use agentic AI vs traditional automation?

Use traditional rule-engine automation when the decision is purely policy-based (income threshold, score cutoff). Use agentic AI when the decision requires reading documents and applying judgement — claim adjudication, loan underwriting, AML review. The two stack; rules handle the deterministic part, the agent handles the judgement part.
